Expected Impact

Applying of deep CO2 removal from industrial flue gases towards CO2-neutral and even CO2-negative operations has not yet been thoroughly realised in open pilot studies and representative long-time tests. For the first time a holistic evaluation of deep removal technologies is carried out, comprising technical, economic, and environmental analysis and validation in long-time tests at real industrial conditions. DRIVE will close this knowledge gap based on real-world tests of thermal and electrochemical regeneration processes. DRIVE’s expected impact remains substantial, with projections estimating significant reductions in CO2 emissions by 2050. With over 10,000 industrial plants globally, particularly in sectors like cement and power production, DRIVE’s results stand to benefit numerous industries. Additionally, advancements in electrochemical cell configurations hold promise for broader applications beyond CO2 capture, aligning with the transition towards electrified processes.

Our Approach

  1. Develop Cost-Effective CO2 Removal Technologies
  2. Showcase CO2 Capture Processes Driven by Thermal and Electrochemical Methods
  3. Increase Carbon Capture Rate Efficiency
  4. Ensure Cost-Effectiveness Compared to Direct Air Capture (DAC)
  5. Achieve a Lower Marginal Cost per tCO2
